As part of this journey, we are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our Welsh Language Unit in Cardiff.

Job description

The role involves using modern software packages to aid the translation of various documents in several different electronic formats, as well as discussing and helping to decide on new terminology and written style. There will also be regular opportunities to get involved in a wide variety of translation projects.

This will broaden your experience of customer management and demand, translation software and terminology, and how we provide our Welsh language services.

To support this, you will need to have excellent communication skills, be able to produce quality translations, and be forward thinking with a positive attitude and willingness to learn.

Person specification

Key Responsibilities  

  • Producing and proofreading accurate and high-quality English  > Welsh translations across a range of materials.  
  • Using translation tools and maintaining linguistic resources to their full potential.  
  • Supporting the development of terminology and consistent style.  
  • Contributing to continuous improvement of Welsh language services.  

You will be provided with comprehensive and structured training that will help you develop these skills.  

Essential criteria  

  • Fluency (written and spoken) in Welsh and English.  
  • Degree in Welsh or relevant qualification or experience in Welsh translation.  
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Welsh translation processes, tools and resources (digital and offline).  
  • Ability to prioritise workloads effectively and communicate clearly with stakeholders.  
  • Understanding of Welsh language customer needs and service requirements.  

Desirable Criteria  

  • Membership of Cymdeithas Cyfieithwyr Cymru (Association of Welsh Translators): English > Welsh.  
  • Sound knowledge of various formats in which Welsh translations are required (e.g. Word, Excel, PDF, HTML, etc).

Degree in Welsh or relevant qualification or experience in Welsh translation.

Alongside your salary of £31,096, HM Revenue and Customs contributes £9,008 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
