Purpose of the role
The Communications Officer will support the delivery of Plaid Cymru’s communications strategy, helping to present the party’s message clearly, creatively and consistently across digital, internal and media channels. Working under the Head of Political Strategy and Communications, you will help present Plaid Cymru’s messages in a clear, engaging and values-led way that appeals to voters, strengthens the party’s profile, and supports wider workstreams including campaigns and membership.
You will be responsible for creating social media content including short form vidoes and graphics, supporting internal communications, and assisting with press and media activity. This is a role within the Communications Team, suited to someone with strong digital instincts, good writing skills, political awareness, and a commitment to Plaid Cymru’s values.
Main Responsibilities
Digital and social media:
Support the day-to-day delivery of Plaid Cymru’s social media output across the party’s main platforms by creating engaging social media content, including graphics and short form videos, to communicate Plaid Cymru’s messages clearly and effectively.
Support community management across the party’s social media platforms, including monitoring comments, identifying opportunities for engagement, and flagging risks or issues where appropriate.
Working with the Digital Campaigns Officer, assist with the creation of content for campaigns and key political events including party conferences.
Assist with monitoring social media trends, political developments and online conversations relevant to Plaid Cymru.
Contribute ideas for creative content that reflects Plaid Cymru’s values and connects with different audiences.
Press and media support:
Assist the Communications team with press work, including drafting short press materials, preparing briefing notes, and supporting media monitoring.
Help engage with journalists and broadcasters to promote the work of the party, particularly during campaigns, party conferences, and key political moments.
Member and internal communications:
Work with colleagues to ensure internal communications are clear, accessible, engaging and consistent with Plaid Cymru’s wider messaging.
Assist with the delivery of digital internal communications across the party.
Develop content, both print and digital, that improves communication with Plaid Cymru’s grassroots members.
Help share good practice from across the party and strengthen a sense of belonging, confidence and momentum among members.
Assist with content planning around party campaigns, announcements, conferences and major political events.
Key Skills & Experience
Essential
Strong written communication skills in Welsh and English.
An understanding of social media platforms and how to create engaging content for different audiences.
Ability to produce clear, accessible and accurate written content.
Experience of creating digital content, such as graphics, videos, infographics or social media assets.
Good political judgement and an understanding of Plaid Cymru’s values and aims.
Ability to work as part of a team in a fast-moving political environment.
Ability to manage competing tasks and meet deadlines.
Experience using design, video or social media tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut or similar platforms.
Experience of writing for newsletters, websites, emails or social media.
Desirable
Experience of working or volunteering in a political, campaigning, media, charity or membership organisation.
Understanding of Welsh politics and the Welsh media landscape.
Experience of using analytics tools to measure social media or campaign performance.
