Equal Opportunities

At Transport for Wales we value diversity. It makes us stronger, helps us understand our customers better, make better decisions and be more innovative.  Everyone’s different and has their own perspective so we’re building a diverse team that mirrors the communities we serve. Through this we’re determined to be one of Wales' leading inclusive employers.  We’re creating an inclusive transport network that everyone in Wales can be proud of.

Who we are

At Transport for Wales, we’re on a mission to transform transport in Wales and make it fit for the future, whether that’s rail, bus, walking or cycling. We want to inspire a nation to change the way it travels, so that we all travel more sustainably and help to combat the climate emergency we’re all facing.

We’re an open and inclusive place to work, where everyone is welcome and our people are supported to reach their full potential. We want to create an environment where our people can grow and succeed. This is key to enabling us to deliver on the promises we’ve made to the people of Wales to build a sustainable transport network that meets their needs.

Role responsibilities

The Senior Design Engineer will be responsible for designing and delivering a range of regional active travel infrastructure projects, working as part of a national multi-disciplinary team, to enhance active travel project delivery across urban and rural settings.

  • Develop the concept, detailed designs, CAD drawings and construction information for active travel infrastructure projects by following the appropriate design standards, legislation and guidance such as ATAG, DMRB, WelTAG, MCHW, Inclusive Mobility, MfS and MfS2 to create active travel projects that meet the Client’s requirements.
  • Support and advocate Highway Authority, Corporate Joint Committee and TfW led active travel project designs that balance local needs and constraints with technical approaches and compliance, by providing design review services and liaising with clients' officers on schemes to provide a high quality stakeholder function, delivering impactful street design and active travel outcomes.
  • Develop and maintain sensitive relationships with stakeholders, by leading creative, collaborative and compassionate engagement processes to manage reputational risks to TfW and by extension Welsh Government, as well as to manage project, partner and place specific risks.
  • Support further development of the Active Travel Act Guidance by gathering, sharing and applying best practice from projects across the TfW team, Strategic Road Network (SRN) and local authority partners to improve the quality, cost and effectiveness of the active travel infrastructure in Wales.

Who we’re looking for

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or associated discipline or demonstrate equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrable experience of working within a technical design team environment.
  • Demonstrable experience of using design software such as AutoCAD, preferably Civils 3D.
  • Knowledge and experience of Construction Design Management (CDM) regulations.
  • Experience of working with construction forms of Contract (NEC etc.).

Welsh Language Skills

The ability to speak/write Welsh would make a great addition to your application, but it is not essential for this role.

We fully support our people who want to improve their Welsh language skills, and personal development for Welsh Language skills are offered in a variety of ways such as online learning, classroom courses and funding attendance at local community courses.
